Diagnostic Assessment for Adults
It is important that you feel informed and reassured throughout the assessment process.
A no-obligation initial phone call allows me to understand the difficulties you have noticed, discuss what you hope to gain from an assessment and answer any questions before you decide whether to proceed.
Before the assessment, I gather relevant background information about your education, work and learning experiences. A short welcome video call a couple of days beforehand also gives us an opportunity to meet and talk through what to expect.
The face-to-face assessment takes place in a calm, dedicated assessment room in Bramham, near Wetherby. The room is self-contained, quiet and low-distraction. The assessment itself usually lasts around 2–2.5 hours and explores both areas of strength and aspects of learning that may be creating difficulty.
Following the assessment, I prepare a detailed diagnostic report, explaining the findings and providing practical recommendations relevant to your circumstances. Reports are normally issued within two weeks, followed by a further telephone conversation so that we can discuss the conclusions, answer any questions and consider appropriate next steps.
A diagnostic assessment is not simply about identifying difficulties. It brings together background information, attainment and standardised assessment data to build a balanced picture of your individual learning profile — including areas of relative strength as well as areas that may be creating difficulty.
The aim is to understand how you process, retain, retrieve and use information, and how this may affect reading, writing, organisation, memory or other aspects of learning and work.
As a specialist teacher and professional assessor with a current Assessment Practising Certificate (APC), I use this information to help you understand not only where difficulties may lie, but also how your strengths can be used more effectively and which strategies may help reduce the impact of areas of vulnerability.

Why adults choose a dyslexia assessment
Adult clients seek a diagnostic assessment for many different reasons.
For some, the main purpose is simply greater understanding. They may have spent years wondering why certain aspects of learning or work have always required more effort, or they may want to make sense of earlier educational experiences with the benefit of an adult perspective.
Others begin to question their own learning profile after dyslexia or related difficulties are identified in their child.
For some adults, difficulties become more noticeable in the workplace. They may be achieving well, but only through considerable effort, extra hours, repeated checking or compensatory strategies that are not visible to colleagues or managers. A diagnostic report can provide a clearer explanation of these difficulties and may help to open a constructive conversation with a manager, HR team or Occupational Health about appropriate support or reasonable adjustments.
For students, a diagnostic assessment may also provide evidence relevant to higher education and Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).
Whatever the reason for assessment, the aim is to provide a clearer understanding of your individual learning profile, alongside practical recommendations that can be used in the way that is most relevant to you.
